"I had made up my mind to propose about 2 months before the big day which gave me a lot of time to plan, but also gave me a lot of time to sit and be nervous about the whole thing. I knew she would say yes, but I wanted to make sure the whole thing went perfectly. Since I work at a wedding venue – The Ivy Room at Tree Studios – I had heard plenty of proposal stories from happy couples which definitely helped with getting some ideas. I knew I wanted to have pictures to remember everything and I had seen so much of David’s work that it was a no-brainer to ask for his help.
I had the ring in hand (custom designed by Christopher Duquet Fine Jewelry - he’s incredible) well in advance, which I don’t recommend. Between hiding it, making sure I didn’t lose it and wanting so badly to propose sooner than planned, I almost lost my mind… But finally the day came. I had chosen our 5 year anniversary, January 14th, which gave me a little freedom to be extra romantic without giving away the big surprise. After Sarah left for her afternoon classes, I snuck out from work to handwrite some clever notes and placed them all over our apartment – detailing where to go, when to be there and which of my favorite outfits of hers to wear.
I had chosen Millennium Park, specifically the Nicholas Bridge that connects the park to the new Modern Wing for the proposal spot. It’s a really gorgeous setting surrounded by the Chicago skyline and would be a great spot to take some beautiful pictures of the moment. David, posing as an average tourist, waited at the top of the bridge while I met my fiancé at the entrance to the park. Sarah and I started up the bridge and, with the help of a friend (who also happens to be my wedding-genius boss), had planned to block any traffic behind us. We had the bridge to ourselves. On our walk up, my nerves were starting to get the best of me and I’m sure I was showing signs that “something” was up.
We made it to the middle and I pulled out the ring… and I’m sure you can see the results. After some celebratory champagne, we headed to the ice rink nearby for a little skating and, unbeknown to her, another mini photo shoot. We capped the evening off with dinner and a lot more champagne at Boka, a wonderful restaurant in Lincoln Park. The night couldn’t have gone any more perfect – she loved the ring, she was totally surprised and now we have these incredible photos of the whole thing. Our families and friends can't stop talking about them."
